25th Mar, 11am: Went to Thomson Women Clinic for my scheduled appointment. The moment Dr Adrian saw me, he asked," baby still dun wan to come out?" He then did a scan as usual. Then he told me he want to check to see if I have dilated. Luckily I wore black tights and a long top. He checked and said no. He asked if I wanted to be induced or to wait. I seeked his opinion. He said baby was already full-term. So I told him I chose to induce. And he asked me to be admited to TMC on the very same day at 11pm. " See you at 11pm", he said.

No time to lose liao. So my hubby went back to drive my mum and we went to Giant ( pre-arranged liao) to buy some of the baby's stuffs. I know during confinement, my mum wont allow me to go out.

3.30pm: Reached home to bathe and wash my hair. Do a last check on my hospital bag. Feeling nervous, excited, scared and tired ( slept less than 4 hrs the previous night )

10.30pm : Waited for my PIL to come back from the club. Dropped my mil at the block ( she was going to China the very next day ) and hubby drove me to TMC.

11pm: Reached TMC. No sight of Dr Adrian. Called him on his mobile. He said, " Dun worry ar, just go to level 2, room 1.

Hubby went to register while I was sent to the observation room. I was asked to change into the robe and then a pill was inserted. Then the nurse strapped something onto me ( CTG )to monitor the baby's movements. The nurse told me that I could go up to my ward one hour later but then baby was too active and fussy. I only managed to go up to the ward at 3am. I was given a 4 bedded ward.Everyone was already sleeping. Even though the nurses in the observation room said I couldnt eat, I was so hungry that I asked the nurse for milo and biscuits. I was only given 4 biscuits but they tasted heavenly leh.. keke. I kept waiting for the pain to come but then it didnt.

26th Mar 630am: I was told to wash up and go down to the observation room again. Still do not feel any pain. The nurse gave me "animal" to empty all my stools. Ask me to tolerate till I got a very strong urge. When the very strong urge came, Dr Adrian arrived. Alamak, I felt like going to the toilet very much then. Nurse asked me to wait, let doc check me. I am 0 cm dilated. :(  But Dr Adrian told me I would be giving birth at 4-5pm.

I was then sent to another room. There was only one bed in it. Was told to lie down. Then a midwife came and told me I was to be put on a drip. I was abit nervous cos I am scared of injections. It was indeed very painful. After that I was told to rest. 30 mins later, I felt warm water gushing out. My water bag has burst. And so I waited for the contractions to kick in. 1-2 hours later, I felt pain. It was still bearable. Like menstrual cramp and my back ached.

10.30am: Pain become more intense. Everytime the pain came, I tried to tolerate. I asked the midwife to help call my hubby. I told him not to come so early and to rest. He was at the carpark. Told him I felt the contractions already. The more pain I felt, I thought it was nearer for labour.

12.30pm: The midwife came again. Ask me to try to empty my bladder. But then I do not feel the urge at all. In the end she told me, " I help you." I wondered, how was she going to help me. In the end, she inserted a tube into me. It was Very Very pain! My hubby held my hand and tried to calm me down. It was more painful than my contractions. The midwife looked at us and said ," See? She still say got no urine. So much."

1.30pm: Midwife came in again and checked my cervix. 1cm dilated only. I was horrified when I heard that. After so long I was only dilated 1 cm! She suggested that I take epidural as I was too tense and the muscles wouldn't be able to relax. I told her that I would discuss it with my hubby. He told me to take it if I really couldn't take the pain. I felt that I could take the pain just that I couldn't relax. In the end we decided to wait for Dr Adrian to come before we decide.

2pm: 5 mins later, Dr Adrian arrived. He checked me and confirmed that I was only 1cm dilated but cervix was soft. He said I would give birth in the evening. He asked if I still wanted to go natural. I said yea. Then he suggested pain relief. He told me that I could try laughing gas, thigh jab or epidural. He suggested that I go for the thigh one to see how I could take it. No side effects except for dizziness and nauseous. I said ok. He gave me two jabs. One is to encounter the side effect. After the Jab, I really felt a lot better. The pain was still there but not that much.

3plus: I suddenly felt very intense pain. But I was feeling very giddy then. I thought it was normal as contractions would get stronger and at shorter intervals. I tried to breathe in and out each time the pain came as I was worried I might just give birth only at night or even the next day. The midwives came in but I pretended to be asleep. I dint want them to check me as it was really uncomfortable.

3.40pm: A midwife who I had never seen before came in. She wanted to take my blood pressure. She woke me up. Just then I had a contraction. It was very bad. I signalled her to wait. She saw my pain and then she checked me.I was scolded for keeping mum when i was in such pain. Then she told me," I teach you how to push" I was thinking maybe it was close to delivery so she wanted me to prepare first. And so professional leh, still got "rehearsal". Then she took something out for me to place my legs. When my contraction came, she asked me to push. My hubby asked her, " Why is she pushing now? She has to be  dilated at least 10cm right?"

He got scolded by the midwife." Of course I know. She is already 10cm dilated and baby is coming!" I was still stunned. Less than 2 hours and I had dilated 10cm? Everything happened very fast then. She asked me to place my hands under both legs and pushed when the pain came. I tried but nothing happened. I felt like shitting then. Dr Adrian came. He sat down and they started telling me ," Push!"  When there was no more pain she asked me to relax. She seemed to know it better than me when the contractions came. Two of the midwives started pushing my tummy. My hubby was instructed to hold my back when I pushed. They chanted, " Push! Push! Harder!" Dr Adrian told me, " Come on! The nurses are pushing harder than you!"

420pm: Suddenly I felt something slipping out. Its baby Geneve! She gave such a loud cry. The midwife placed her in front of me. My hubby told me its our baby. I was very touched but felt too giddy to look at her properly. It was such a huge relief. Dr Adrian started to clear my womb and stitched me up. It was painful but I was in such a daze to feel anything too much. I looked at baby Geneve looking at me and I felt so very touched. My baby girl is out! She weighs 2.745kg.And she looks like a minature of me!

I was then pushed to the ward with baby Geneve. She looked at me with her eyes and stuck her tongue out at me. She really melt my heart then.. There, my active "watermelon" is out at last!

sounds like a very loooong process.....tiring. Does the thigh injection decrease the pain by a lot? Any side effects like epidural?

Congrats on your bundle of joy!!!

Thanks Grace. At one point I really felt like giving up.I wondered if I could stop the labour then. But seeing my baby now, everything is really worth it. No regrets.I will go through it again.

yeah it was indeed a bit tiring and painful. All along I was wondering how the contractions felt like, what's my threshold for pain and such.. And I got my answer! But then dun worry ya, when you see your baby, you will feel that everything is worth it. The thigh injection did help me decrease the pain. I think it made me dizzy and all I wanted to do was to close my eyes and sleep the dizziness away. The only pain I felt after that was the contraction when the baby was coming.Rem to relax. Keep breathing in and out when the pain comes so that your muscles will not be so tense.

The only side effects will be dizziness and will feel nauseous. For me the side effect wore off at about 6-7 hours later.

woah, you still can pretend to be asleep at that point.

puroland: Yeah, the midwife is very experienced. In fact when my gynae told me to relax once the pain was gone, she told the doc ," no, her contraction is here. Ask her to push!" She very fierce but she is good.

I did take bird nest like once a mth, soya bean milk, fresh milk etc. But I took coffee daily too nearing the month before I gave birth.. Take coconut weekly too 2 mths before my edd. I think it helps to clear the skin or something.

havavi: Yea cos I do not want the nurse to check me. very uncomfortable.

Hi Jeslyn, congrats.. after reading ur blog, i felt abt scared. Like very pain, esp the empty bladder part... :P
take care..

meltrazz: I mus agree that was painful. I tried to tolerate but tears still flowed when she inserted the tube. My hubby said I seemed to cry out louder than during labour. Its a very memorable experience.. One that I will never forget. But the moment u see your baby looking into your eyes and smiling at you, everything is worth it. =) I didnt think I could go through this too cos I am one who is terrified of pain. A bit of cut only I will put handyplast and grumble at the pain. So I guess if I can do it, you can.

does all kind of painkiller has side effects? I heard that some ppl vomit and giddy after epidural... seems like laughing gas has the least side effects but also the least pain killing effects rite.
jeslyntan wrote on Apr 22, '08
Mel: I believe you can. For the sake of your baby, you will be surprised by the amount of determination and perserverance you have. Rem to bring camera. My hub brought along but was in such a daze that he forgot to take pics till my gynae reminded him to.
jeslyntan wrote on Apr 22, '08
puroland: laughing gas only relieve 20% of the pain, thigh jab about 50% while epidural is 100%. For my case, I took the thigh jab and I did experience giddiness and nauseousness. But I did not vomit. I was feeling pretty okay by 8-9pm. Maybe you can seek advice from your gynae.
